APG Homes - The Southport

Rear-view design never loses up-front appeal

Writer:  Ingrid Waltham
Publication:  The New Homes Guide -The West Australian
Date:  1 August 2009

The architecture and design of the Southport, by APG Homes, is intended to reflect the images of surfing, sunsets and holidays inspired by the Queensland town of the same name.

Certainly the spirit of relaxed indoor and outdoor living is made easy with the expansive rear-living areas and alfresco area.

"The Southport is designed for families who want to capture rear views on a traditional block," said APG sales and marketing manager Leo Callisto.

"It is set up so the full-height glass-panel sliders can be opened from both the kitchen and the living room to create one big seamless entertainment zone.

"With the added multi-media room for the children, a separate study, parents' suite plus three extra bedrooms, the Southport is sure to be enjoyed by all occupants."

Described as "fresh, chic and contemporary", the home's elevation has a distinctive style, with a hipped roof line, rendered blade walls and the bold, straight lines of the extended entry statement that protects the porch entrance.

A spacious entry lobby leads to a private access to the main bedroom at the front of the home.

The bedroom is almost 17sqm and has room for furniture alongside the built-in make-up table and big, integrated walk-in robe.

The stylish open ensuite has twin above-bench basins with twin mirrors, and a designer shower and toilet, each behind paque glass pivot doors.

The media room or lounge has full-height windows to a courtyard and the study is big enough for two work stations.

A separate wing houses the three secondary bedrooms, each of which has glazed sliding-door robes. They share the family bathroom and a separate powder room which is convenient to the main living areas.

Double doors can close off the quieter rooms at the front from the communal heart of the home, where the kitchen is positioned to interact with the adjoining open-plan dining and living area.

The alfresco area is also designed to be incorporated into the day-to-day functioning of the home double sliding doors directly from the kitchen means food and dining paraphernalia need not be carted through living areas.

Along with 30mm solid-stone benchtops and stainless-steel cooking appliances, the kitchen has plenty of storage with a walk-in pantry and banks of self-closing drawers and handle-free cupboards for a sleek, modern appearance.

The island bench has an upstand to hide the sink from the breakfast bar. Full-height windows envelope the open-plan living area and provide a pleasant outlook to the alfresco area and garden as well as an easy flow for indoor/outdoor living.

The Southport has a width of 15.95 metres. Other versions are available from $267,000.
