Point Samson at heart of Pilbara property, tourism boom

DESPITE Australia's uncertain economic climate, WA's picturesque Pilbara region is in the middle of a tourism and property boom.

The region, which has been selected by Ziva Spa Resorts for its next five-star boutique development, has experienced record-breaking growth in the second half of 2008 and early this year.

Ray White Karratha owner Lindsay Gibson said sales in the Karratha region had not had such numbers for the past six years.

Residential sales totalled more than $5 million for December 2008 and more than $7.5 million for January 2009, and are on track for another record-breaking month.

"The strength of the WA mining boom means the local market is moving ahead and people are well and truly coming to the North-West,'' Mr Gibson said.

"We expect sales in Karratha and surrounding areas for February 2009 to match these figures, if not exceed them.''

Investors can buy in an exclusive and emerging coastal hot spot.

"As one of only two quaint coastal settlements in the region, Point Samson has been at the heart of the boom,'' he said.

Tourism WA's northwest regional manager Vaughan Davies said the mining boom had caused a shortage of accommodation.

In 2008, the Pilbara region experienced occupancies of more than 90 per cent, Mr Davies said.

"In fact, there's evidence that the coach market is changing its route and bypassing the region altogether because of the lack of tourism beds. Tourism WA welcomes this new development,'' he said.

Ziva Spa Resorts Point Samson has received widespread support from WA's peak tourism bodies and the Pilbara community as a much-needed destination for travellers to the region.

Witt Property Group director Shelly Brushett said Ziva Spa Resorts Point Samson would be a unique boutique development.

"This development will help to establish Point Samson as one of Australia's premier five-star tourist destinations,'' she said.

On completion, slated for late 2010, Ziva Spa Resorts Point Samson will comprise 112 five-star apartments, two restaurants, a luxurious day spa and resort facilities, including swimming pools and tennis courts.

The development is awaiting approval from Roebourne Shire Council.

Witt Property Group director Warren Witt said the project had been going through the approval process for more than 15 months.

"The Witt Property Group is extremely focused on seeing Ziva Spa Resorts Point Samson come to fruition, especially because the resort is set to introduce a waste-management system never before seen in WA,'' he said.

"We are focused on working with Roebourne Shire Council and the WA Department of Health to ensure the Commonwealth Government's 12-point plan is adhered to.''

Construction is expected to start next month.

Point Samson is a 30-minute drive from Karratha, which is a two-hour flight from Perth.
