Back to nature at Newhaven

STOCKLAND'S award-winning Newhaven estate has been given a boost with the completion of five new sustainable public artworks.

The sculptures, created byWAartist Flint Edwards, reflect the native fauna of the Armadale area and have been made from recycled timber.

Crafted from timber found on site at Newhaven, the sculptures include canoes, a bobtail goanna, jumping fish, a sandpiper totem pole and a ''Luck of Nature'' twin totem pole.

The sculptures also double up as children's play equipment and seating for residents and visitors to Newhaven.

Edwards, who has created public artworks for several communities and represented Australia in ice carving, said the sculptures reflected Newhaven's natural landscape, but also included an
element of fun.

He cited the collection of five wooden canoes as an example.

''I wanted to create a piece of art that would spark imaginary play,'' he said. ''I pictured children climbing in and out of the canoes sharing an adventure. I also wanted the canoes to reflect nature, specifically the living stream which flows through the estate.

''My other designs are inspired by nature too. The bobtail was crafted from the base of a dead melaleuca tree and stretches over 3m and almost 1m high, while the totem poles encompass the beauty of nature and feature fauna native to the area.''

StocklandWA general manager Graham McArthur said Mr Edward's striking public artworks encouraged residents and visitors to interact with Newhaven's lush natural environment, while promoting responsible sustainability.

''Newhaven is a carefully planned, environmentally sensitive community with everything a family needs at its doorstep,'' Mr McArthur said.

Newhaven is 18km from the CBD in Piara Waters, formerly Forrestdale. It will eventually be home to about 2500 households and features the first five-star energy-rated display village in WA.
