What to Look for in a Builder?

There are special considerations to keep in mind when selecting a home builder.

"Building a new home is a very serious decision and probably one of the biggest investments you'll make in your lifetime.  You need to be as educated as possible about every aspect of new home construction" says Rob Leader, Construction Manager at Homebuyers Centre.

"With hundreds of builders of new homes in Perth and South West of WA, you need to do your homework to ensure you choose a reputable builder with a proven track record".

Rob provides some tips below to keep in mind when selecting a builder:
  • Do not assume all Builders are the same.
  • Do your research to find a builder who is not only well qualified but also has a good reputation.
  • Search online for reviews of potential builders and ask around.
  • Keep up to date with industry publications such as HOME in The Sunday Times and New Homes in The West Australian.
  • Visit display homes and ask questions. Take notes about what you like and dislike.
  • Get recommendations from people that you know.  
  • Contact the Master Builders Association and the Housing Industry Association for recommendations and advice.
  • Ask your Builder to provide details of customers they have recently built for and speak to previous customers about any positive and negative experiences.
  • Ask your Builder for proof of construction time (what was their average construction time over the past 12 months?)
Rob's final piece of advice? "Taking time to do your research and choose the right builder for you will prevent costly regrets in the future".
